Four candidates challenge De Venecia’s re-election

 FOURTH DISTRICT RACE

UNLIKE in the 2016 election, Rep. Christopher de Venecia is not running unopposed in next year’s election in the Fourth District.

In fact, his re-election as congressman of the 4th District is being challenged by four candidates: Teodoro Wilhelm Manaois, incumbent Dagupan City Councilor Redford Christian Erfe-Mejia, and former Dagupan City Vice Mayor Alvin Fernandez, all running as independent candidates, and Larry Gryson de Venecia, under the Nacionalista Party ticket.

Erfe-Mejia was personally accompanied to the Provincial Elections Office by Vice Mayor Marc Brian Lim, an NP mayoralty candidate in Dagupan.

The candidacy of  Alvin Fernandez was totally unexpected by many since his father, the late Dagupan City Mayor Alipio Fernandez, and former Speaker Jose de Venecia were best of political allies who never parted ways during their heydays in politics.

Fernandez said he decided to file his CoC the night before to give the electorate in the Fourth District a choice.

In the case of Larry Gryson de Venecia, the speculation is he will eventually be substituted by Celia Lim, mother of Vice Mayor Lim on or before November 29.

A report said it was the camp of Vice Mayor Lim that could be behind the fielding of four candidates to oppose Cong. De Venecia in a bid to marginalize his support for re-electionist Mayor Belen Fernandez and improve chances for the vice mayor.

The camp of Congressman de Venecia can not be reached for his reaction at presstime. (Leonardo Micua)
